Welcome

To the NSSC's Green Buildings Sub-committee blog!

Remember: It’s not just the physical walls of the classroom that are at stake here, it’s the tenability of the values put forth inside - let’s put into practice what we preach.

Hi everyone. Lets talk about my lunch today:

I went to visit Hawthorne farms stand and spoke with the owner, Ben. I tried and bought lacto-fermented, traditionally crafted, certified organic “Raw Curry Sauerkraut” and “Raw Kim Chee”, sunflower sourdough loaf, edamer cheese, and havarti cheese, as well as granola. All organic and amazingly delicious. Ben suggested our Rachael Ray’s Earth Day Lunch have a sandwich of the Kim Chee and curry saurkraut on the bread with cheese and some tahini. I think the man’s a food genius. He also suggested a salad made of carrots, apples and the sauerkraut with sunflower seeds. After talking to me about his enzyme-filled favorites, he gave me a wheat-free, sugar-free fruit bread that was amazing. At Thursday’s meeting I’ll be bringing some samples from the bit I bought today.
Hawthorne grows and makes all the food they sell, and it’s all organic. The people at the stand were so excited about selling to the cafeteria and had lots of ideas. I didn’t buy their yogurt with my granola, however there is some real potential for a great breakfast set-up in any dorm or cafeteria.
I also know a lot of students eat Kim Chee and Hwathornes Kim Chee is truly wonderful. We should note that as a lot of Korean students might be more inclined to come. We should also advertise the Rachael ray’s earth day lunch as a free food event (since we’ll be giving out samples) and have a survey or at least our petition on hand.
Lastly, If anyone if interested, I have a excel document with all the prices of Hawthorne’s food.
